Dear Friend & Fellow Cinephile,

We've all had the experience. You're sitting in the dark, the popcorn is hot, the previews have ended, and the credits begin to rolland then you imagine it. As the names flicker by, you catch yours among those who have made the film possible

We want to make this happen for you! And in the process, you can help us fulfill our vision of "DEMON OF THE DERBY: the Ann Calvello Story." We've been working on this documentary film for the past year and half. We've got 140 hours of footage in the can, we've storyboarded the narrative, we've got distributors asking for a rough cut, and we've arranged for a post-production studio, but we need to raise another $15,000 to finish. So, we've decided to hold a garage sale of our film credits. We're calling it the "Second Unit Sell Off." And we'd like you to be our first customer.

Ever felt like your life has prepared you to be an Explosives Specialist? Always wanted to be referred to as the Best Boy? Had a hankering to try Aerial Photography? Now's your chance! We're offering you the opportunity to get the credit you desire without having to go through the stress of an actual production. Just make a donation to support the completion of our film, and choose your instrument of infamy. Write a check, and circle the credit you'd like in our film. Everything listed on the next page is up for grabs.

"DEMON OF THE DERBY" is a one-hour documentary about the compelling and crazy sport of Roller Derby, and its most notorious star, Ann Calvello. Ann, at age 70, is still skating in Roller Derbies. And she's still acting as if she were the Grande Damest Diva alive, even as she bags groceries at her part-time job at the Millbrae Safeway. Imagine Dennis Rodman as a grandmother. That's Ann Calvello.

Roller Derby was a true cultural phenomenon the original "sports entertainment spectacle." Before the World Wrestling Federation, before Extreme Sports, before Pay-Per-View, over 20 million viewers watched Roller Derby each week on television. It sold out Madison Square Garden regularly, and even beat Bonanza in TV ratings for awhile. The sport had it all: a National League, a Hall of Fame, expansion teams, championship tournaments, and many stars of incomparable color and athletic talent. And the Queen of this raunchy and rarefied universe was "The Meanest Mama on Skates," Ann Calvello.

The film promises to be a wild ride through the 50-odd years that Ann has spent in the Roller Derby. We've got amazing interviews with trainers, fellow skaters, rabid fans, ex-lovers, her family, a 92-year-old nun from her Catholic junior high school, archival footage going back to the 1940's, magazine covers and believe it or not the answer to the ultimate Roller Derby question "Is it real or is it fake?" (You'll have to come see the film to find out).

Best of all, any donation you make is tax deductible. Just write your check out to "Film Arts Foundation" and note "DEMON OF THE DERBY" on the memo line. Send it to us at the Film Arts Foundation, 346 9th Street, 2nd Floor, San Francisco, CA 94103, and we'll send you an acknowledgment for the IRS. The next thing you know, our film will be finished, the lights will dim, and your name will scroll across the big screen to the cheers of the opening night crowd.

See you at the movies,
